Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda video game series is one of the most well known video game franchises ever created. The idea for the game series came from game designer Shigeru Miyamoto's boyhood adventures exploring the forests, lakes, caves, and villages of Kyoto, Japan. The first installment in the series, simply known as The Legend of Zelda, arrived in the United States in 1987. The game told the fantasy tale of a boy named Link and his quest to rescue Princess Zelda. Players were required to collect various useable items and weapons, solve puzzles, fight enemies, and explore the vast fictional world of Hyrule. Over the years and across subsequent consoles, more than a dozen Zelda games have been produced by Nintendo. Most involve Link having to rescue Princess Zelda.
